Hofstra Law Review
Abstract
The article discusses the growing expectation for public school teachers to administer Narcan to students experiencing opioid overdoses, emphasizing the need for proper training and legal protections. It addresses the disparities in training and immunity among schools and highlights the proposed "School Access to Naloxone Act of 2024," which aims to incentivize states to allow trained school personnel, including teachers, to administer Narcan. The Act requires states to provide training, maintain a supply of Narcan on school premises, and offer civil and criminal immunity to trained personnel acting in good faith. Its goal is to increase access to Narcan in schools and ensure teachers are prepared to respond to opioid emergencies while being legally protected.
