Throughout his career, Monroe H. Freedman was consistently recognized by his students, colleagues, and members of the legal profession as an extraordinary man who shared his boundless gifts at every level of the educational and legal world. He received the American Bar Association’s highest award for professionalism, in recognition of “a lifetime of original and influential scholarship in the field of lawyers’ ethics,” and a Martin Luther King Award for “decades of work to advance human dignity and social justice.” He received the American Bar Association's Gavel Award Certificate of Merit for his first book on legal ethics, and later received the Sanford D. Levy award from the New York State Bar Association for his contributions to the field of professional ethics.
